In addition to the research projects, REU students participated in a series of workshops (safety, NMR, EPR, computational chemistry, bioassays/separation science, scientific ethics, and careers in chemistry). Weekly REU group meetings, where two REU students presented research progress reports to the group, were also held. Since two of the REU students performed research at Salish Kootenai College (SKC, Pablo, MT), we visited SKC for one group meeting (the other group meetings were held jointly at both sites using videoconferencing). While visiting SKC, we attended the annual Salish pow-wow.
2006 REU Program

The REU students led chemistry workshops for high school students who were participants in a summer research program. They also went on hikes, rafting trips, picnics, and a trip to Yellowstone. The culmination of the summer research program was a poster session where each student presented his or her work. About a hundred faculty members, graduate students, MSU administrators, and other undergraduates attended the poster session. An awards dinner followed the poster presentations and formally concluded the summer program.
