NIH awards 1.2M to Prof. Brian Bothner
Brian Bothner is the Primary Investigator on a 1.2M award from the National Institutes of Health to study Adeno-associated viruses (AAV) and their use in gene therapy.
Dr. Bothner, faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, will investigate AAV vectors which can mediate safe gene transfer for the long-term correction of genetic diseases in animal models and have been shown to be safe and persist in humans. AAV vectors based on serotype 2 (AAV2) are the most extensively studied vectors in animal and human clinical trials. Vectors constructed from other AAV serotypes exhibit different cellular tropism and delivery efficiencies in animal models, presenting the potential for improved therapeutic performance. Dr. Bothner’s lab will collaborate with structural virologists Mavis Agbanbje-McKenna and Robert McKenna and molecular biologist Nicholas Muzyczka from the University of Florida to study the structure and function of AAV particles with respect to cell entry and genome release.
